Taj Mahal

Posted on April 30, 2009

Taj Mahal is the most precious architectural heritage of the wonder that was India. As many people remarked, it is the combination of so many beauties, and the perfect manner in which each is subordinated to the other that makes up a whole, which the word can not match and which never fails to impress even those who are most indifferent to the effects produced by architectural objects in general. It is believed that the name "Taj Mahal" was derived from the name of Shah Jahan wife Mumtaz Mahal and means "Crown Palace".

Taj Mahal, built by Shah Jahan in memory of his consort Mumtaz Mahal , is perhaps most enduring symbol of human love. Arguably, it is still India's most potajmahalpular tourist attraction. In fact, for many outsiders visiting India, it is the most irresistible spot. This perfectly symmetrical edifice is set amidst landscaped gardens on the banks of Yamuna river. If Agra, whose origins are recounted in the epic Mahabharata as 'Agrabana', is paradise, then the Taj is arguably its heart core!

Istanbul

Straddling the continents of Europe and Asia, Turkey tries to be a bridge between West and East. The portion of Turkey's land in Europe may be small (about 5 percent), but the country's largest city, Istanbul, is there. With a population of nearly 13 million people, Istanbul is the third most populous European urban area, after Moscow and Paris. Sixteen centuries as the legendary capital of the Byzantine, Roman, and Ottoman Empires, Istanbul has long entranced the civilized world. It physically and metaphorically bridges the cultures and philosophies of Europe and Asia, Occident and Orient. Historically a tolerant melting pot (as the center of Christendom for over a millennium and Islam’s seat for another 500 years) it remains home to the Patriarchate of the Eastern Orthodox Church, Sephardic Jewish heritage sites, and legacies of numerous ethnic groups. Maybe for all these Istanbul was chosen as European Capital of Culture in 2010.

Qutub Minar – Delhi

Posted on April 14, 2009

Qutub Minar is the highest stone tower you can find in India and also the world's tallest brick minaret. Qutab-ud-din Aibak was the one who started the construction of the tower in 1193 after defeating Delhi's last Hindu kingdom. He could not finish the construction in his lifetime but Iltutmush and Firoz Shah Tughlak finished later on the tower. Delhi Qutub Minar is made of five stories and each of them has a projecting balcony with their diameter. At the base of the 73 m high tower the story diameter measures 15 m and 2.5 m at the top. The legend say that the tower was built to commemorate the beginning of the Muslim rule in India. This construction is surrounded by several other ancient and medieval structures and ruins which can also be visited. You can find this tourist attraction near New Delhi, 15 km South of the capital more precisely, and the best time to visit this is between October and March.
