Posted on April 14, 2009

Frederic Auguste Bartholdi was commissioned to sculpture in 1876 a statue to commemorate 100th birth of the American Declaration of Independence. Gustave Eiffel and Maurice Koechlin were the ones who help Bartholdi with the design of the massive iron pylon and secondary skeletal framework. This statue is a gift of the French people for the Americans and symbolizes the friendship between the two countries. The Statue of Liberty National Monument is there since 28 October 1886 and is considered more than a monument, is considered a living symbol of freedom for people around the world. In 1984 at the order of Ronald Reagan, the president of United States of America at that time, the statue entered in a restoration process which ended on 5th July 1986. The statue is of a robed woman holding a torch and stands atop of a stonework pedestal and it measures 93 m tall (46 m the statue and 47 m the pedestal).
